An ancient port grew up by Alloa on the River Forth but the town came into existence largely because of Alloa Tower. This impressive building (open to the public from October to April) was built in the late 1400s and would have been vistited by Mary Queen of Scots. Today, Alloa is the main town in Clackmannanshire.
