Arbroath Abbey, built in 1178 by William the Lyon, is famous for being the place of the Declaration of Arbroath of 1320. Nowadays there are only the ruins of the abbey and a wonderful new visitor centre, containing a range of interpretative displays and carrying a viewing gallery, from which visitors can see much of the abbey and admire beautiful views, with the red stones contrasting with the green of the mown grass.
