An abbey has stood at this peaceful site since 1140 when King David I asked the Augustinians to build one, then called the Abbey of St Mary. At its height, in the late 1200s Cambuskenneth had an extensive complex of buildings, including a large church. It would have been a place of retreat for the kings from the nearby Stirling Castle. Today, however, the only standing building is the bell tower, which was restored in the 1860s. The main complex is in ruins but you can still see its outline.
