The Old Cowane’s Hospital (also known as The Guild Hall) is a striking looking building. It was built in 1639 by John Cowane a wealthy Stirling merchant and Dean of the Merchant Guild who left nearly £2000 (an enormous sum in those days) for the construction of a poor house. A colourful statue of Cowane stands above the door. Today the building is used to house local genealogical records and an expert can help you trace your relatives in the area (booking required).
