Dumbarton as a town was the centre of the ancient kingdom of Strathclyde from the 5th Century until 1018. The castle is situated on a volcanic rock that overlooks the Firth of Clyde and throughout the centuries has been an important place of refuge for the royals. The fortifications of the castle are a classic example of 18th Century Georgian military architecture, and inside are further impressive pieces of furniture and interesting artefacts.
