Located in a private garden (but easily viewable from the road), close to Lady Mary’s Walk and MacRosty Park, Eppie Callum’s Oak is an ancient ’English’ oak (Quercus robur) which is said to have once sheltered the notorious outlaw Rob Roy MacGregor (1671 -1734) from his enemies. Jacobite leader Bonnie Prince Charlie (1720-88) also apparently hid up inside the trunk. Despite these notorious connections, the 70-foot tree is in fact named after the woman who once ran the nearby Oakbank Inn, a former favourite with cattle drovers from the Highlands. She is said to have planted an acorn in a teapot then moved it to the garden when it became too large.
