Gartmorn Dam Country Park is a haven for anglers, walkers and cyclists and is signposted from New Sauchie, north of Alloa on the A908. It holds Scotland’s oldest reservoir, dating from 1713, but even before then it was a watery place; Gartmorn means the farm (gart) over the marsh. The reservoir was constructed to provide an increased supply for water pumps in the Sauchie colliery. In the warmer months thousands of mayfly, caddis and damselflies thrive on the nutrient rich shallow water which is of national importance for its pondweeds.
