Innerpeffray Library is the oldest free-lending library in Scotland and was founded in 1691 by David Drummond, 3rd Lord Madderty and brother-in-law of the Great Marquis of Montrose. It is still open to the public to this day and houses around 3,000 volumes, many of great age and value. One of the most interesting publications there is Montrose’s personal pocket Bible, in French, bearing his autograph. Robert Hay Drummond, Archbishop of Canterbury, added many books 60 years later when he inherited Innerpeffray and other great estates.
