Overlooking the Old Course and West Sands beach (location of the filming of the movie ‘Chariots of Fire’) the Martyrs Monument is a striking object on the Scores. This obelisk features the names of Protestant and Catholic martyrs who were burnt at the stake in the town in the 15th and 16th century’s, after John Knox preached his first sermon in the town in 1547, and was imprisoned because of his Calvinist beliefs. A very dominant feature on the coastal side of the town, the Monument is a good meeting point, and is close to local attractions such as the British Golf Museum and St Andrews Aquarium.
