This museum was opened in 1842 after the Montrose Natural History and Antiquarian Society outgrew its original lodgings, and wanted to consolidate their collection in one place. Designed as a ‘temple of learning’ there are a great many highlights in this collection. These include the Jacobite Ribbon, an 18th Century garment of political origin and the Bone Ship, an early 19th Century model ship made of bones created by French prisoners during the Napoleonic Wars.
