St Andrew's Roman Catholic Cathedral, designed by Scottish architect George Mathewson and opened in 1836, is the oldest Catholic church in Dundee. The Gothic styled building, despite its deceptively narrow looking frontage, has a magnificent interior designed to seat about 1200 people. There are three altars (the High Altar of very attractive design and two side altars) and a sanctuary with the Bishop's throne inside the church. The halls in the basement served for many years as the only Catholic school in the city of Dundee. Nowadays there are services for foreigners in their native languages, including Ukrainian Rites and Polish Mass.
