Founded in 1450 as Bishop Kennedy's College of the Holy saviour, St Salvators chapel was designed as a place of education and missionary business. Today, the chapel is a popular place for students and the town locals to worship, and hosts events such as music recitals regularly. The building is a fine example of 15th Century gothic architecture in the area. A popular story associated with the chapel involves the 1528 incident of Patrick Hamilton, who was burnt at the stake. Today, people claim to see his face on the clock tower of the chapel. In the cobblestones on the street, his initials have been placed. Popular superstition forbids any student from standing on these intitials, for fear of failing their degree.
