Dominating the Stirling skyline, Stirling Castle has played a pivotal role in Scotland’s turbulent history. The Stewart kings James IV, V and VI, and Mary of Guise, all added to this architectural spectacle. Most of the castle dates to the 16th Century and the castle provided a home from the time of Alexander I until the Union was signed. Of particular interest are the gatehouse and the Great Hall, which has wonderfully painted in a traditional rich cream with an authentic oak-ceiling restoration.
