Built in the 13th century by Edward I, Aberystwyth Castle has had a turbulent history, having been rebuilt several times. It was destroyed once following an attack by Welsh patriots in 1282, and subsequently rebuilt. It was captured by Owain Glyndwr in 1404 until being recaptured by Henry of Monmouth. The castle has housed a prison and a royal mint in 1637. Royalists occupied the castle during the Civil War, but following surrender in 1646, Cromwell ordered it to be destroyed. Today’s remains are of the castle’s inner walls.
