This remote abbey was founded in 1198 by the Cistercian order for the mother abbey at Cwmhir in Powys. The monks farmed sheep and bred horses. Although not a wealthy abbey, it once owned a fine silver gilt chalice and paten which was found on a nearby hillside in the 19th Century. The most prominent feature of the ruins is the church. The tower was added in the 14th Century. Only the foundations remain of the cloisters and domestic buildings. Cymer Abbey is signposted off the A470, north-west of Dolgellau.
