The Fairbourne & Barmouth Steam Railway originated as a horse-drawn tramway for carrying building materials to develop the small seaside resort of Fairbourne. It was then owned by the miller Sir Arthur McDougall. Today, the little steam hauled railway runs for two miles along the beautiful coast of south Snowdonia. It passes through sand dunes to its terminus at Penrhyn Point, a peninsula on the south side of the Mawddach estuary. There is a cafe here and, weather and tides permitting, a ferry can be taken across the estuary to Barmouth.
