St Mary`s Church was built in the mid 13th Century when Welshpool was an English garrison town on the English-Welsh border. Much rebuilding has taken place, and it was restored in the Victorian era. The ceiling of the chancel is 15th Century, but it has been repainted. The church contains the tomb of the 3rd Earl of Powis and several memorials to the Herbert family of Powis Castle. In the churchyard, the stone next to the sundial is said to be part of the abbot`s throne that was at Strata Marcella Abbey.
