Established in 1996, the Spaceguard Centre is a working astronomical observatory concerned with Near Earth Objects (asteroids and comets) and the threat they pose to life on Earth. They work closely with other astronomical organisations around the world, including NASA and ESA and are linked to three robotic telescopes in Australia, Hawaii and the Canary Islands via the Net. The centre has a planetarium with a mini dome which seats 25 and a working model of the solar system. Day and evening tours can be pre-booked.

We visited The Spaceguard Centre on Jan 7th 2012 - Two adults and two children aged 8 & 11 both still at primary school. The 11 year old was already somewhat knowledgable about the planets but the 8 year old considerably less so. We found the tour - given by the joint owner Jay Tate - totally brilliant, fascinating and very educational. Although she denied it there was probably too much information given over the one & a half hours + for the 8 yr old to fully absorb some children younger than this could quite possibly get bored. Otherwise totally suitable for people of all other ages and highly recommended for anyone interested in expanding their general knowledge.
