Steam locomotives from far away lands haul the coaches of the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway. The railway first opened in 1903 to serve the rural communities but, because of competition with a bus service, had to close in 1931. Freight trains continued for another twenty-five years. A preservation company was soon formed and did extensive work on the line. The eight mile journey through the lovely, peaceful Banwy valley starts at Raven Square in Welshpool. At the terminus in Llanfair Caereinion there is a tearoom and riverside walks.
