This sole surviving Martello Tower on the West coast of Jersey was built in 1834 from Jersey Granite. Housing a ground floor weapons and ammunitions store with ten troops and their commanding officer on the upper floor it was constructed, along with 31 other round towers, to protect the island’s coastline from French invasion. Originally with a canon on a rotating platform on the roof it is now home to a Visitor Centre telling of the ecology of St. Ouen's Bay and the history of the tower.
