Les Landes, St. Ouen, Jersey JE3 2AB - Channel Islands, UK
Designated a Site of Special Interest (SSI) in 1996 this 160 hectare maritime heathland is located on the North West coast of Jersey. Amongst the Gorse, Bracken and Heather is evidence of 5000 years of man's occupation of the area; a 14th Century castle and the gun emplacements, bunkers and observation towers of Hitler’s 'Fortress Europe' being the most obvious. Bound by 3km of granite cliffs the area is home to Common Toads, Golden-ringed Dragonflies and many rare species of birds.
