Constructed in the early 13th Century, 'Gorey Castle' overlooks Gorey harbour. Although eventually replaced due to gunpowder rendering it indefensible, it was once the island's only prison and became a garrison for German troops during the occupation, with fortifications being added to blend in with the existing structure. The castle has undergone extensive renovations, re-opening in 2006, and is now one of the best preserved castles in Britain. It is a much photographed site and an ideal setting for medieval drama and re-enactments.
