Contribute to
UKattraction
...and
be paid for it!
Introduction
UKattraction.com
is a directory of tourist attractions and places of interest throughout
the UK. Each attraction has its own entry page on the site. (For an example
entry, click
here.)
With time, we hope to have tens of thousands of entries on this site,
but it's a slow process to try and do it solely by ourselves, and so we
rely also upon contributions from others.
If you live in the UK, have a digital camera and a good grasp of English
(ie. can write proper, grammatically correct sentences!), then we might
have something that's just for you.
Let's get
to the nitty-gritty... how much do you pay?
We pay £4 for each entry we use. In order
for us to add an entry, you'll need to supply a photograph, the name of
the entry and contact details, a description and some keywords (see below).
We are after any and all attractions... museums, churches, parks, monuments,
lakes, mountains... pretty much anything at all (within reason!) that
would be of interest to tourists.
This work will really suit someone that enjoys being their own boss, getting
out and about, and has an interest in their surroundings... plus a desire
to earn a few £...! Hours and the amount you do are flexible.
If you have say 20 or so points of interest on your doorstep, you could
probably photograph them all in a space of a couple of hours, and write
a description for each in around 10 minutes. (20 lots of 10 minutes) +
2 hours = a total of 5 hrs 20 mins, and the pay for that would be £80
so you can see it has potential...!
Payments are made upon receipt of invoice from contributors that have
completed 12 or more entries. (ie. please don't invoice us in dribs and
drabs of two or three as it just adds to our administration!)
What do
we have to provide?
An
example of what you need to provide for each entry follows:
Name of entry: Kendal Parish Church
Address: Kirkland, Kendal, Cumbria LA9 5AF
(Please don't forget the postcode, and please punctuate as above)
Telephone:
01539 721248
Fax: (in this instance there was no fax number)
URL: www.kendalparishchurch.co.uk
Email address: kpc@onetel.net.uk
Description: Visitors to this church are struck by its size and
the lightness of the interior. This lightness is due to the unusual construction
of 5 aisles, separated by columns and allowing generous window area. The
central aisle is 800 years old and the other aisles have been added over
the centuries so that, in its heyday, a congregation of 1100 was regularly
accommodated. The church is only three feet less wide than York Minster!
(The description needs to be around 75 to 90 words in length. We also
ask that it doesn't contain something that will potentially make the entry
become dated in a few years' time. For example, if you say an attraction
is open Monday to Friday, 9am - 5pm... we don't want to include that kind
of thing, in case they later decide to close on Wednesdays. We can't hope
to keep abreast of those kinds of details for all the entries we list
and this would risk us getting complaints from users of the site, which
we obviously don't want!)
Keywords: kendal, kirkland, parish church, churches, cumbria, lake
district, england, uk, holy trinity, religion, religious, 12th century
church, anglican, history, architecture, choir, stained glass
(The
keywords need to be comma separated as per the above.)
Photograph:

(The
photograph needs to be landscape rather than portrait, and measure 240
pixels wide by 170 pixels high. It also needs to be optimised for the
web so that it is no greater than 30KB in size.)
Obviously, the text and photographs need to be your
own work!
OK...
I'm interested! What next?
If
you are interested, and consider yourself a perfectionist (it's important
that we have the job done well! ), please do the following:
1. Email the following statement to dedicate@dedicate.co.uk along
with your name, postal address and telephone number. (We'll probably never
phone, it's just for our records. If you also use MSN Messenger, your
MSN address might be handy.)
Paul Johnson / The Dedicated Partnership Ltd. have commissioned photographs
and text from me for the UKattraction.com website. It is understood that
the photographs should be original - taken by me - and that the text should
be written by me. While it is understood that these photographs and text
are primarily intended for use on the UKattraction.com website, I hereby
grant Paul Johnson and/or The Dedicated Partnership Ltd. license to reproduce
any or all of them on any other website or websites.
(The reason for the last bit is that we sometimes
like to try re-use the content on client sites such as http://www.theravensworth.com
(see the attraction content on there which is pulled from UKattraction.com)
and some entries are sometimes suited also to other UKseries.com sites.)
2. Send two sample entries to the same address,
as a separate email to the above. (It's a good idea to first check that
they don't already feature on the site!) The reason for sending just two
samples is that it can help in eradicating any problems at the onset.
It's better to have done just two entries and discover a problem than
to have done twenty! Assuming all is well, we would use these two entries
on the site, and they would count towards your first earnings, and you
would then be welcome to submit further entries.
When sending entries in, please send one Word document for the text
of all the entries you are submitting (rather that a document for each),
and individual .jpg images for the pictures (rather than embedding
the images within your Word file). Thank you!
Other
queries
We hope the above answers all your questions. However, if you have a question
that isn't answered by the above, please email it to dedicate at dedicate.co.uk
with "UKattraction.com contributor query" in the subject line.
You can also contact Paul by MSN Messenger on altyfc at homail.com (note
that this address is used for messaging only, and not for email).

Afternote
(February 2006)
Because of the growing interest in this project, we are being inundated
with interest from freelancers all over the UK.
The quality of the submissions has been a little variable in some cases,
particularly when it comes to the pictures. A lot of pictures with grey,
washed-out skies in them have been submitted and these will compromise
the overall quality of what we are trying to achieve. As of now, we are
insisting that the sky in photographs is blue; to ensure this, do your
photography work on the good days - and at suitable times in the day when
the light is at its best (early tends to be good) - and use the poor-weather
days for writing up.
Also,
always check the site for attractions that have already been covered -
that is changing daily right now.
Update (2011/2012)
We are still hiring! This is an ongoing project. Even though we have built
up a huge resource now, we are still looking to add to it. Please get
in touch.
