Alston is a small remote town high in the North Pennines. It is situated in the Eden district of Cumbria. The town lies at around 300m above sea level. Alston has a steep cobbled high street with a market cross and buildings dating from the 17th Century. The town is famous for locally made produce - for example, Alston cheese. It is also the starting point for England's highest narrow gauge railway.

  Latest Alston Review

For a lovely country break away from it all I love visiting Alston in Cumbria. The cobbled streets and stone buildings date back to the 17th century and make me feel like I have stepped back in time. I like the traditional pubs and find the locals really friendly. I always bring back plenty of locally produced Cumberland mustard which is very tasty! My other half loves the golf course in Alston, it is said to be the highest course in England and has amazing views.   - Emma Wright

A lot of visitors tend to miss Alston out of their itineraries when visiting Cumbria, but those who venture up the side of Hartside Fell won't be disappointed.

Set high in the Pennines, the town is rather isolated from the rest of Cumbria, but that's also what gives Alston its charm. It is one of the very few places outside of a museum that you'll see an entire cobble stone main street and shops that aren't all about selling to tourists.

That's not to say there's nothing to do. The South Tynedale Railway is a must for kids and big kids alike as it is the highest narrowguage railway in the country (possibly the world) and is slowly being extended as funds allow.

The nearby Nenthead Mines Heritage Centre shows how Alston developed from the mineral mines and is very educational.

All in all...
