The medieval Brough Castle stands on the remains of a Roman fort which was originally constructed to protect the strategically important Stainmore routeway. The site offers fantastic view across the Pennines and into the Cumbrian countryside. The castle keep is one of the central features, dated around 1200, replacing an original stronghold that was destroyed by William the Lion of Scotland in 1174. Lady Ann Clifford restored the castle in the 17th Century, and some of her gardens still remain.
