Buttermere is a very small, pretty village nestling on the flat land between Crummock Water and Buttermere Lake. It is surrounded by spectacular scenery and offers much to hikers of all abilities. In the village church is a memorial to Alfred Wainwright, the author of many guidebooks about cumbria and the fells. Nearby, Scale Force can be found which is the Lake District's highest waterfall at over 50 meters.
