Dr. Manning’s Yard, originally known as Braithwaite’s Yard, was the site of a drysalters and dyestuffs business, started by George Braithwaite in 1713. This contributed to Kendal’s importance in the wool trade. George Braithwaite supplied dyestuffs, alum, fuller’s earth and other technical materials to the local textile trade. Down the yard were worker’s cottages, the counting house or office over the archway, a ropewalk, a weaving shed and a dyehouse.
