Egremont is situated on the western coastal plain just outside the Lake District National Park. The remains of a Norman castle, largely destroyed in the sixteenth Century, overlook the main street. The town has an annual event each year in September called the Crab Fair. During this period the town has a carnival atmosphere. Also at this time the World Gurning Championships take place requiring competitors to pull the most ugly face possible.
