The quiet serenity of Elter Water is the ideal place for contemplation away from the crowds, or for exploring on a day when the clouds have swept in and ruled out ascending to the heights. The name comes from Old Norse and means “swan lake” and, possibly because Elter Water is slightly off the tourist trail, the lake is a haven for bird life.
