Forever immortalised by its association with Wordsworth, Grasmere is a treat in its own right. Small but perfectly formed, the lake can be strolled around in a morning, leaving time to explore the village or ascend to the summit of Helm Crag, with the distinctive “lion and lamb” rock outcrop, after lunch. The best views of Grasmere can be found by making the gentle climb to Loughrigg Terrace, a wide path that follows the contours above the lake shore.
