Great Borne has a height of 616m (2,021 ft) yet is a rather secluded Wainright. Situated along the ridge which divides the Ennerdale and Buttermere valleys, its most distinguishing features are its southern slopes that fall towards Ennerdale Water; these are composed of pink granophyre rock and give the slopes a reddish tinge. Ascents of this fell are very easy as there is a nearby car park with a path leading over the small neighbouring summit of Bowness Knott. Walkers following this route can enjoy pleasant views of Ennerdale Water and, upon reaching the summit, an extensive vista Loweswater Fells.
