Situated in the valley of Mardale, Haweswater is a manmade reservoir that was controversially begun back in 1929, not least because it meant the flooding of farming villages and the forced relocation of residents. The remnants of the village of Mardale can still be seen at times of drought. Haweswater is the most easterly of the lakes in the Lake District and the area is home to England’s last remaining golden eagle.
