One of only four Lake District peaks over 3000ft, Helvellyn comes high on any peak-bagger’s hit list. The classic way to climb the mountain is by way of Striding Edge from Glenridding, a knife-edge of an arête that sends you soaring high above the icy waters of Red Tarn. Completely safe, if somewhat traffic-jammed with tourists in summer, this is one of the most spectacular ways up any of the Cumbrian mountains.
