This tranquil 12th Century Augustinian priory was once a prime target for raiders because of its proximity to Hadrian’s Wall and the Scottish borders. One such raider was Robert the Bruce. In 1306-07, Edward I and his retinue stayed at Lanercost for five months. After the priory’s dissolution, the Dacre family converted parts of the monastic buildings into a fine residence. Visitors can see the ruined cloisters, choir and transepts, the grand Dacre Hall and the nave which continued in use as the current parish church.
