This is the oldest part of the town of Wigton - the market cross was here until it burned down in 1805. This area is still used as the fish market on Tuesdays. The monument was erected in 1872 by George Moore of Whitehall in memory of his wife Eliza. Her portrait is on each face. The four bronzes (Acts of Mercy) are by the pre-Raphaelite sculptor Thomas Woolner.
