The Orton Scar limestone pavement is a geological feature of a previously glaciated landscape about seven miles south of Appleby-in-Westmorland to the east of the B6260 Orton road. It comprises the remnants of an ancient limestone layer that has been eroded and weathered down to a platform of blocks which shelter various species of hardy plant life. Most of the area is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Measuring about three miles west-to-east, and known variously as Orton Scar, Great Asby Scar and Grange Scar, the area is a wild but beautiful part of east Cumbria.
