Penrith Castle and the very attractive Castle Park stand opposite and high above the town’s railway station. The original tower of the Castle was built by Bishop Strickland between 1397 and 1399 and was then greatly enlarged and improved by Ralph Neville, Earl of Westmorland. Today, the noble ruins and surrounding moat are an attraction to young and old alike and the jagged outline of the castle forms an impressive backdrop to a most attractive municipal park.
