This impressive ruin of a 14th Century castle is located on Piel Island, close to Barrow-in-Furness and is accesible by boat and by road depending on tides. The castle has a large keep, inner and outer baileys and the main curtain walls still standing. It was built for the Abbot of Furness to guard the deep-water prt against attacks from pirates and Scots raiders. Today the building is overseen by English Heritage.
