St Andrews Parish Church is an imposing red sandstone building set within a quiet quadrangle just off Penrith’s main street. Most of this Georgian edifice was built between 1720 and 1722, but the tower is much older and all that remains of the original 13th century church that stood on the site. The medieval tower is thought to have been built to defend the locals from the ubiquitous Scottish raiders. The interior is unusual for an English parish church in its rectangular, largely unadorned, shape with a three-sided balcony supported by large pillars.
