Owned and maintained by English Heritage, this 15th Century gatehouse is all that remains of the Benedictine priory that was once such an important part of this community. Wrongdoers could be pardoned at the abbey if they enlisted tofight with the English army against the Scots. The main reason that the gatehouse survived was because it was adopted as the vicarige for the parish church in the village.
