The Windermere Ferry is a really handy facility for taking a short trip from Bowness across to the other side of Lake Windermere. The trip only takes a good 5-10 minutes but is quite a unique way of enjoying the lakeland scenery too. The ferry takes foot passenger, bikes, cars and vans with the price increasing as the vehicle gets bigger. The queue can vary and in the busy summer months can be a little while but signs on the side of road give an indication as to how long the wait will be. There is often an ice-cream van there to help pass the time. In adverse weather or if the water level is too high the ferry can close.
