Yewbarrow has a height of 628 m (2,060 ft). It is a Wainright that lies immediately north of the head of Wast Water. The name originates from the abundance of yew trees that had once grown on the fell. Its unique location makes it the only fell that offers unobstructed views of the Scafells, Great Gable, Kirk Fell and Pillar. Although smaller than the other fells in the area, the ascent of Yewbarrow is quite rough and it requires some effort to reach the summit. Probably the best ascent for confident visitors is from Wasdale Head and through the 'Great Door', a cleft in the rocks that will provide scramblers with beautiful views of Wast Water.
