The Thetford Ancient House Museum can be found in the centre of Thetford along Barton Street within easy reach of the town centre. The museum is housed in a magnificent timber framed Tudor merchant’s house built in about 1490. There has since been an extension, which was added in about 1590. The building is noted for its fine carved oak ceilings and contains displays on local history, flint, archaeology, natural history and Thetford’s connection with an Indian Prince, the Maharajah Duleep Singh and writer Thomas Paine.
