The De Rothschild family bought Ascott in 1876. It was originally a Jacobean farmhouse and has been considerably transformed and enlarged. It contains a very fine collection of paintings and oriental porcelain as well as English and French furniture. The gardens of over 30 acres are a mixture of formal and natural and contain specimen trees and shrubs as well as an herbaceous walk, lily pond, formal bedding and topiary sundial.
