Barkham Street in Wainfleet was built on the design of Sydney Smirke in 1847 for the Bethlem Trust. Similar streets were built at the same time in Southwark, London, close to the Bethlem Hospital. The street is such an attraction because the city ‘Regency’ architecture is so much different to the other houses in the small town of Wainfleet. Wainfleet was once by the sea and was an important port, but since the draining of the Fens, is now four miles inland.
