Berkhampsted Castle is owned and managed by English Heritage and represents a fine example of a motte and bailey castle, close to the railway station in the Hertfordshire town. Surrounded by a double ditch and two moats the motte is over fifteen metres in height. The castle was built shortly after the Norman invasion by Robert, Count of Mortain, the half brother of William the Conquerer. Although in ruins, many of the original features can still be seen.
