This is one of five medieval bridges across the River Wensum in Norwich, a greater number than any other English medieval city. It was built in 1345 on the site of an earlier ford that had been in use since Roman times. As the Wensum forms a defensive barrier on this side of the city, it was provided with a gatehouse on the Western end, which was demolished in 1791. It is built of imported stone, brick and local flint, it is the oldest bridge in Norwich to survive without later rebuilding.
