Boarstall Tower was built in 1312 and is Buckinghamshire’s only surviving medieval military building. It was once the main entrance to the royal hunting forest of Bernwood and the gatehouse to the manor house. The tower played a significant role in the English civil war, the area being in the front line. Damage inflicted by cannon can still be seen on the tower. The building was updated in the 17th Century, but the medieval belfry and fortifications are still intact. The tower is now a Grade 1 listed building managed by the National Trust.
