Built in the mid-16th Century, Burghley House belonged to William Cecil, Lord Treasurer to Elizabeth I. Hardly lived in by Cecil, who was always away at Court in London, it has passed down the generations in a good state for the public viewing today. Not just a historic country house, Burghley has been the set for a number of films including Pride and Prejudice and the Da Vinci Code. Recent modernisation of their reception area and additional ‘classrooms’ are a welcome addition and are attractive enough to complement the older buildings.
