This English Heritage site contains the partially excavated remains of a Roman ‘Saxon Shore’ fort that has been dated to around 200AD. The fort was built as part of a programme of defences under the occupying imperial forces, looking to secure the East Anglian coastline of England against attack. Wall and ditch sections, as well as original foundations are clearly visible on the site, which is thought to have been occupied by Romans until close to the end of their time in Britain in the 4th Century.
